Definition

Positive cold is cold with a temperature above 0°C and below 18°C.

The temperature is generally set at +3°C, but it can vary depending on the goods to be stored. Positive cold storage slows down microbial development.

Here is a list of the main categories of products to be kept in positive cold:

Packaging

Here are our recommendations on packaging products to be stored in positive cold:

  • If you sell food, make sure to wrap each product securely in plastic sheeting . Click here to see specifications for packaging flowers.
  • Then, place the food in a plastic, airtight container.
  • If necessary, use cold packs to place them under the container.
  • Wrap the container (and possibly also the cold packs) with bubble wrap.
  • Place your product in a box (e.g. cardboard) that meets the maximum permitted dimensions.
  • Fill the empty spaces in the box with cushioning materials to avoid possible damage to your products.
  • Seal the box with tape after making sure that the products (if there are several) do not collide and do not leak.

Special packaging for flowers and plants

Packaging requirements vary depending on the contents of your shipment whether floral arrangements, seedlings or mature plants.

However, there are certain regulations that apply to all forms of plants. These have been grouped into a list that we present to you here:

  • Secure the product inside the package, as directional arrows cannot always be followed.
  • To prevent any kind of leakage, ship the vases or containers without water and cover the soil in the pots with a plastic sheet.
  • Place the shipping label at the top of the package to increase the chances of shipping in the preferred orientation.
  • Fill the empty spaces in the box with cushioning materials to avoid possible damage to your products.
  • Seal the box with tape after making sure that the products (if there are several) do not collide and do not leak.
